Putlur Amman Temple History

Putlur amman Temple History / Angala Parameswari Story :

Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi walked from Melmalayanur to Ramapuram (the place where this temple is present), which later became known as Putlur because of the goddess Parvathi manifesting itself as a Putru – an anthill. This place was a forest that time with full of neem. Parvathi tired after the long walk, sat down and asked Shiva to bring him water. Lord Shiva was looking for water but could not find it nearby. He had to go to the Coovam River (once Coovam had excellent pure water) to bring the water. It started to rain heavily and the river was flooded. So he had to wait a moment for the rain to calm down. Tired of waiting for the Lord and exhausted by hunger and sadness, the goddess Parvathi lay down on the ground and an anthill covered her. She became the same person with the anthill.

Lord Shiva returned soon after and discovered that Parvathi had remained there permanently. So he too was standing next to her and was called thandavarayan. This is probably the only temple in Amman where you can find a Nandi before the shrine, because of Shiva’s presence behind the goddess.
