About Mahishasura Mardini
Mahishasura is a Sanskrit word which means mahisha + asura. mahisha means buffalo and asura means demon, or “buffalo demon”. As an Asura, Mahishasura waged war against the Devas because the Devas and Asuras were in perpetual conflict. Mahishasura had won the favor that no man could kill him. In the battles between the gods and the asura, the Devas led by Indra were defeated by Mahishasura. Discouraged by their defeat, the Devas assemble in the mountains where their combined divine energies merge into the goddess Durga. Newborn Durga fought and killed Mahishasura, riding a lion. Thereafter, she is named Mahishasuramardini, which means “the killer of Mahishasura”.
The legend of Mahishasura is told in a major text of the Shaktist tradition known as Devi Mahatmya, which is part of Markandeya Purana. The story of Mahishasura is told in the chapter where Markandeya tells the story of the birth of Savarnika Manu (Ref Vishnu Purana). According to the Markandeya Purana, the story of Mahishasura was told in 2nd Manvantar (about 1.3 billion years ago according to Vishnu Purana) by Maharishi Medha to a king named Surath, as an incident that occurred in of ancient times, even for 2nd Manvantar. Therefore, the period in which the history of Mahishasura is placed is believed to be several billion years ago, according to the account of Markandeya Purana and the explanation of the Manvantars given in Vishnu Purana. The geography, society, living things on earth were all different from the social configuration in other Hindu mythologies, contrary to the hypothesis of modern interpretations of the caste or varna of Mahishasura. He is described as an evil being who can change his outward form, but never his demonic goals. According to Christopher Fuller, Mahishasura symbolically represents the forces of ignorance and chaos hidden by external appearances . Symbolism is conveyed in the Hindu arts found in South Asia and Southeast Asia (Javanese works of art, for example), where Durga is shown as a symbol of serene, calm, collected and graceful goodness while it pierces the heart and kills frightened, overwhelmed and outwitted Mahishasura people.
