More about Cruisin Down the Street in My 64 Lyrics

“Boyz-n-the-Hood” is the first single, released in March 1987, by Eazy-E, leader of a new rap group, N.W.A. Hip-hop in the Los Angeles area was always led by DJs and electro, funk sounds with dance, party themes. But with hardcore and narrative lyrics and an indestructible tempo, Eazy’s single was a local success, reissued at the end of the year on the N.W.A EP titled N.W.A. and on the unauthorized compilation album N.W.A. and the Posse.

Eric Wright, founder of Ruthless Records in 1986, commissioned the songwriting team Ruthless – record producer Dr. Dre, aided by DJ Yella and Arabian Prince, and the ghostwriter Ice Cube – to write the song in accordance with vision of Wright. But once a New York-signed rap group rejected him, Wright hit him himself, dubbed Eazy-E. In 1988, after winning rapper MC Ren, N.W.A released their first official album, Straight Outta Compton.

While NWA’s album Straight prompted Los Angeles area hip-hop to abandon electro and move quickly to hardcore, rappers still called it “rap reality,” as the media would soon call it. from “gangsta rap”. Meanwhile, also in 1988, a “Boyz-n-the-Hood” remix arrived on a more cheeky companion album by N.W.A, Eazy’s first album, Eazy-Duz-It. After the dissolution of N.W.A in 1991, Eazy’s EP entitled It’s On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa, released in 1993, brings another remix, “Boyz N Tha Hood (G-Mix)”.

However, in 1991, the title became emblematic thanks to the director John Singleton, who borrowed the title of this song for his film Boyz n the Hood. It took a total of almost 30 years for the song to reach the pop charts. Released in August 2015, the movie Straight Outta Compton had renewed interest in the NWA when, on September 5, “Boyz-n-the-Hood” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100. That week at # 50 , it was the third highest debut, behind the 1988 title song “Straight Outta Compton”,originally too inflammatory for a large radio broadcast.
