Murudeshwar Temple History

Murudeshwar Temple History :

According to the history and legends of the chapters of the Ramayana epic, Kaikesi, who was Ravana’s mother, was also a devotee of Shiva. She made Lingas sand from the beach and prayed them daily. However, every night, the sea washed the Linga. Seeing the distraught mother, Ravana promised to go to Mount Kailash and bring him Lord Shiva’s Atma Linga.

Ravana went to Mount Kailash and performed severe penance to impress Lord Shiva. He sang his praises in the famous Shiva Tandava Stotram. He cut off one of his ten heads as a gift for Lord Shiva. Finally, Lord Shiva granted him a wish. Ravana asked the Atma Linga to Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva then removed the Atma Linga from his heart and offered it to Ravana but set a condition that he should not keep the Linga until he reached his destination. If he keeps the Linga down, the Linga will be affixed and nothing will separate it. Ravana accepted and began to head south to his kingdom. All the other lords were afraid because they were sure that Ravana was going to abuse the Atma Linga to wreak havoc on the world.

Narada approached Lord Ganesha and asked him to stop Ravana’s trip. Lord Ganesha was aware of Ravana’s daily rituals, especially the evening bath that Ravana would take. With the help of Lord Vishnu, who wiped out the sun to give an appearance of twilight, Lord Ganesha turned into a little boy. Ravana wanted to take a bath but could not suppress the idol.

Lord Ganesha, disguised as a boy, passed him. Ravana called him and passed on the idol telling him not to place the idol on the ground. The boy placed the idol on the ground before Ravana returned from his bath. Lord Vishnu unlocked the sun and it was still daylight. The place where Lord Ganesha placed the idol is popular as Gokarna.

Ravana became furious and tried to uproot the Linga but he could not do it. He threw the case covering the Linga that fell in a place called Sajjeshwara. The cover of the case that contained the Linga fell in a place called Gunavanthe and the string covering the Linga fell to Dhareshwara. The fabric covering the Linga fell to Murudeshwar.

When Lord Shiva learned this, he visited these five places and worshiped the Lingas there. He said that these places will be known as Pancha Kshetras and whoever would worship here will be released from all their sins.
