More Information about Surya Mantra Lyrics

Surya Namaskar , Salut to the Sun or Sun Salutation, is a yoga practice as an exercise incorporating a sequence of a dozen gracefully linked asanas.  The asana sequence was born in the tradition of Hatha Yoga in the 9th century in India. The basic sequence is to move from a standing position to downward and upward dog poses and then return to the standing position, but many variations are possible. The set of 12 asanas is dedicated to the Vedic-Hindu solar deity Surya. In some Indian traditions, the positions are each associated with a different mantra.

The name Surya Namaskar comes from the Sanskrit सूर्य Sūrya, “Sun” and नमस्कार Namaskār, “Salutation” or “Salut”. Surya is the Hindu god of the sun. This identifies the Sun as the soul and the source of all life.  Chandra Namaskar is also from Sanskrit चन्द्र Chandra, “Moon”.

The origins of  Surya Namaskar are vague; Indian tradition links the 17th century Samarth Ramdass to the exercises of Surya Namaskar, without defining the movements involved.  In the 1920s, Bhawanrao Shriniwasrao Pant Pratinidhi, the Rajah of Aundh, popularized and named the practice, describing it in his 1928 book The Ten-Point Way to Health: Surya Namaskars. It has been claimed that Pant Pratinidhi invented it , but Pant stated that it was already a common Marathi tradition.

Ancient but simpler sun salutations like Aditya Hridayam, described in Canto 107 “Yuddha Kaanda” of the Ramayana are not related to the modern sequence. Anthropologist Joseph Alter states that Surya Namaskar was not recorded in any Haṭha yoga text until the 19th century  At that time, Surya Namaskar was not considered yoga and her postures were not considered asanas; the pioneer of yoga as an exercise, Yogendra, wrote criticizing the “blind” mix of sun salutation with yoga as the “uninformed” did.

Yoga specialist Norman Sjoman suggested that Krishnamacharya, “the father of modern yoga”,  used the exercises of traditional and “very ancient” Indian wrestlers  called dands (Sanskrit: दण्ड daṇḍ, a personal ), described in the Vyayama Dipika of 1896 as the basis of the sequence and its vinyasas in transition. Different dands closely resemble the Surya Namaskar Tadasana, Padahastasana, Caturanga Dandasana and Bhujangasana asanas.Krishnamacharya was aware of Surya Namaskar, since regular courses were held in the hall adjacent to his Yogasala in the Rajah Palace of Mysore. His students, K. Pattabhi Jois, who created modern Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, and BKS Iyengar, who created Iyengar Yoga, both learned Surya Namaskar and the movements of vinyasa between asanas of Krishnamacharyrya and used them in their yoga styles

Modern yoga historian Elliott Goldberg writes that Vishnudevananda’s complete book of 1960, “Illustrated Book of Yoga,” proclaimed in printed form “a” new utilitarian conception of Surya Namaskar ” than his guru Sivananda. had originally promoted it as a health remedy for sunlight … Goldberg notes that Vishnudevananda modeled Surya Namaskar’s positions for the photographs in the book, and that he recognized the sequence “for what it is primarily : not a treatment for a multitude of diseases but a fitness exercise. “
