Vadapalani Murugan Temple History :

A sacred place of worship, Vadapalani Murugan Temple was established at a place where Lord Murugan’s devoted devotee, Annaswamy Naikar, revered him. He had wandered to places in search of Lord Murugan’s blessing and a cure for his long illness. A sage appeared in his dreams and guided him in his search for God in his own home.

Annaswamy went to worship Lord Muruga in one of the six houses of Lord Muruga in Palani. On returning home, he found an inspiring image of Lord Muruga that he brought back home and began offering prayers to God. He built a thatched roof as a shrine dedicated to Lord Muruga, who was later replaced by the striking structure that we can see today.

According to legends, Arul vakku of Annaswamy, which means that the powers of prediction and healing drew many faithful towards the sacred sanctuary. After the death of Annaswamy Naikar, Rathinaswamy Chettiar took charge of the religious place of worship. It is believed that the priest also had the power to dictate the words of the solutions.

About Vadapalani Murugan Temple

The architecture of the temple follows the traditional style of the temples of southern India, with the Rajagopuram with several stucco figures, many of them are poses of the classical dance form Bharatnatyam. There are many deities residing in the premises of the Vadapalani Murugan temple, such as Ganesh or Vinayaka, Lord Shiva, Meenakshi Amman, Sanmuga, Kali, Bhairava, Dakshinamurti, Mahalakshmi, etc. The idol of Lor Murugan is the chief deity among all, and he resides in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

The only specialty of the deity is that he stands up with his shoes, which is a symbolism of getting rid of his arrogance. He also stands one foot forward, and the myth says that it is because the Lord is rushing to help his followers. A fig tree is considered the sacred tree of this temple, where passionate people bind strings to pray for their wishes to be fulfilled. They also offer sacrifices, clothing as well as gold and silver as prizes. There is a room that is used for weddings. More than 7000 couples knot here each year, blessed by the Murugan.
